Do Rottweilers need a lot of space? ›

Rottweilers also need a large amount of space and exercise – they are playful and enjoy chasing games.

While Rottweilers can live in smaller accommodations with their owners, there's a much higher chance for them to cause accidental destruction in a smaller space. It may also mean that they'll require even more time out of the house each day to get their needed daily exercise.

Rottweilers are often fun-loving goofy dogs, despite many people assuming they're “big, scary guard dogs”!)

Rottweilers can be stubborn

Willful is a term often used. These are dogs that must have training and socialization. They are generally easy to train (see the first point above) but don't go overboard with the repetitions or response time will get slower and slower. He may even drag his feet.

The Rottweiler breed's traits include loyalty. These dogs do not turn on their owners unless abused or neglected.

As they are companion dogs, they also require plenty of affection and like to touch their owners and follow them around. When required however, Rottweilers can be left alone for up to 6 hours – though being left alone for too long promotes loneliness, boredom, and stress in your dog.

Fear of Strangers or Other Dogs: Some Rottweilers may exhibit fear or anxiety towards unfamiliar people or dogs, especially if they haven't been adequately socialized from a young age. This can manifest in behaviors like growling, barking, or attempting to retreat from the perceived threat.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dogs typically live between 8-15 years. The Rottweiler life expectancy of 9-10 years is on the lower end of this range primarily because of its large size.

What two breeds make a Rottweiler? ›

The breed's ancestors were the mastiff-like, cattle-herding dogs of the ancient Romans who accompanied their armies as they swept across Europe. Some of these dogs were left behind when the army moved on, and in Germany, they bred with local sheepdogs and produced the Rottweiler.

You're a take charge person who knows what you want out of life. While a strong, self-assured dog might sound like a helpful contrast to those with timid personalities, a Rottweiler needs to know their owner is the “alpha” from day one.

They have latent aggression, are prone to biting – even in play – and are very protective of their territory. They are naturally suspicious of both new people and new dogs. You may think that their reactions are always out of aggression, but it's not true. They also act the way they do out of fear.

How much room do they need? A large yard with a six-foot fence is ideal, but Rottweilers have been successfully kept in large apartments. A yard is essential if you are getting a puppy or young dog. A yard will help keep the dog exercised and reduces boredom, possibly preventing some destructive behavior.

Rottweilers are considered to be large dogs and will need a kennel that gives them enough space. Be sure that your kennel is at least the length of its body and at least twice its width. Opt for a larger kennel rather than a smaller one. You want your dog to be able to move around while inside.

Rotties as house pets

A strong protective instinct will remain with them, even if the dog is not specially trained for protection. They will be territorial, and only the family will be free to roam in what they consider as their territory.

Rottweilers are fairly easy to keep for such large dogs and, in fact, have a tendency to obesity if not exercised enough. Coat care is minimal a quick, weekly grooming will suffice most of the time. Some rottweilers do drool a fair amount, especially large males with loose flews (lips).
