Sept. 3: LHP Jordan Montgomery (lower leg) OK after early exit
Montgomery had a contusion the day after leaving Monday afternoon’s contest vs. the Dodgers as a result of being hit on the lower right leg with a line drive off the bat of Teoscar Hernández that registered at 93.7 mph, but he's expected to be available for his next outing with the D-backs. Manager Torey Lovullo said the 31-year-old southpaw was considered day to day, noting that he would be down for a few days regardless given his long relief role.
Montgomery was making his second relief appearance of the season since his recent shift to the bullpen, a stint in which he has allowed three earned runs across seven frames.
Sept. 3: 1B Christian Walker (left oblique strain) activated from IL; OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (left calf strain) placed on IL
Walker, who injured his oblique on July 29 against the Nationals, was activated ahead of the D-backs' series opener in San Francisco on Tuesday. The two-time Gold Glove Award winner was hitting .254 with an .814 OPS before being sidelined for all of August, and his 23 homers are tied with Eugenio Suárez for second most on the team behind Ketel Marte's 30.
The corresponding move was less welcome for a D-backs team making a push to return to the postseason. Gurriel was placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Monday, with a left calf strain sustained during Sunday's win over the Dodgers. Manager Torey Lovullo said Gurriel's injury is not expected to be serious, with a return after the minimum time possible. More >>

2B Ketel Marte (left ankle sprain)
Expected return: Early September
Marte, who was was forced to leave the D-backs’ game on Aug. 18 after aggravating what the club says is a “low-grade” ankle sprain suffered on Aug. 12, has continued to ramp up his baseball activity. Marte recently did some "aggressive running," manager Torey Lovullo said, a positive sign as the veteran second baseman nears a return. There is still no official date of return on the table, though Marte has been asymptomatic and Lovullo said on Sept. 2 that the 30-year-old could return to the starting lineup during the club’s current road trip through San Francisco and Houston. OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (left calf strain)
Expected return: Mid-September
Gurriel, who exited the D-backs' game on Sept. 1 with tightness in his left calf, landed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 2) after imaging revealed a strain. Both Gurriel and manager Torey Lovullo said the injury is not considered serious, with the hope that Gurriel can return after missing minimal time. (Last updated: Sept. 3)
C Gabriel Moreno (left adductor strain)
Expected return: TBD
Moreno has begun hitting in the batting cage. He left the D-backs’ game on Aug. 5 in the second inning after running out a ground-ball single, landing on the 10-day IL on Aug. 6. An MRI showed a strained left adductor muscle and manager Torey Lovullo said Moreno will be out “weeks not days," but remains optimistic that he will be able to return before the end of the season. SS Jordan Lawlar (left hamstring strain; No. 1 on D-backs Top 30 Prospect list)
Expected return: September
Lawlar could return to action with Triple-A Reno "soon," manager Torey Lovullo said on Sept. 2. The D-backs' top prospect (No. 8 overall, per MLB Pipeline) reinjured his left hamstring in July, two games into a rehab assignment in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League. He had been expected to miss six to eight weeks at the time. Lawlar initially injured his left hamstring while legging out a triple in the ninth inning of Triple-A Reno's June 15 game, with a subsequent MRI showing a Grade 1 strain.
The 2021 first-rounder also landed on the IL earlier this year after opening the 2024 campaign with a thumb injury. He played his first Minor League game of the season on May 29. (Last updated: Sept. 2)
